FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Q: What makes your services different from those of a language teacher?

A: I do not teach or tutor languages; my coaching services go deep into the emotional and psychological side of learning languages. In tutoring and language teaching, the focus is on practicing the language and learning what I refer to as the mechanics of the language (vocabulary, grammar, etc.) to be able to speak it.

Through resilience coaching, my clients first become aware of their limiting beliefs and how these beliefs are stopping them from speaking French in the way they want to. Together, we go to the root of these issues and work on moving from feelings of language insecurity, to being able to speak French with courage and self-trust.

As a result, my services do not replace tutoring sessions, but can actually act as a great complement.

Q: Can I work with you even if I’m not an English-speaking Quebecer?

A: Yes. Although I specialize in the challenges that English-speaking Quebecers face, limiting beliefs about speaking another language are universal. The resilience work that we do in coaching sessions can be applied to any language that you are learning, and will be tailored to your specific needs.

Q: What kind of struggles do your clients come to you for?

A: My clients are individuals who are actively trying to work on their languages, even if they feel that they are not fluent or bilingual. The kind of topics that get addressed in coaching sessions with my clients include:

- accent shame

- fear of making mistakes

- focusing on lack in their language knowledge, instead of acknowledging what they do know

- feeling that they are not professional if they are not perfect in their second language

- believing that they can’t belong in their professional circles or societies in which they live

- thinking that they are too old to learn languages

- thinking that they aren’t good at languages and are feeling too much doubt or hopelessness to continue to learn and practice

-feeling stuck in their ability to progress in their language learning after having spent several years taking various language courses

-experiencing insecurity even in their mother tongue because of their dialect or regional accent

- believing that their mother tongue interferes with their second language usage, and therefore trying to suppress this part of their identity

-thinking that leaving jobs or moving away is the only option because they don’t believe in their language abilities

- deciding not to apply to jobs that require their second language because they think that they are not good enough

Q: What does a typical coaching session look like?

A: This is what a coaching session looks like with my clients:

- we start by figuring out what is weighing most heavily on them, so that we create an agenda that honours the transformation that they want

- then we get deep into the arc of the session, where I guide, prompt, and gently but firmly challenge limiting beliefs to uncover what else may be true

- Once they start to uncover other more empowering truths about themselves, we move into the end of the coaching session which includes defining clear and measurable action steps to implement their new perspective, followed by accountability measures to ensure that they are encouraged to follow through on the action step that we've set

One thing to note about working together– my coaching sessions are entirely client-led. I believe that every person has different goals and values, and so my job is not to tell my clients what they need and what they should do. Rather, I provide a supportive environment and apply specific coaching skills and tools that are proven to guide you, but always towards where you need to be. It’s like sailing a boat – the client knows where the destination is, and I am there to help steer them to where they wish to go, and assist them in navigating the choppy waters that are naturally part of the journey.

Q: This is exactly what I've been looking for! How do I get started?

A: The first step is booking a free consultation with me. Consultations are video calls that can be scheduled through my booking link, and their purpose is for me to understand your needs and to determine if my services are aligned with these goals. It will also give us a chance to see whether we are both comfortable with each other.

During consultations, I ask you specific questions regarding your language needs, and I also take the time to explain what coaching with me would look like. If we feel aligned, I will ask you if you would like to hire me as your coach. There is never any pressure to say yes, and I will never try to convince you to sign-up – I only want to work with people who full-heartedly wish to work together.

Q: Do you offer refunds?

A: No, I don't offer refunds, and there are a couple of reasons why. One is for motivation and momentum, to ensure that clients who sign up for coaching are in it for the long run. We do deep emotional work together, and sometimes this can be challenging. If a refund is a possibility, it can be too tempting to choose the easy route and stop sessions. The other reason is that client satisfaction is very important to me – I proactively check-in with my clients to make sure our sessions are always aligned with their goals.
